Thirteen years. That is how long Shahid took to finally find its way to a streaming platform.
Hansal Mehta’s acclaimed 2013 film led by Rajkummar Rao, is now streaming on Prime Video in India. The film’s arrival would normally be a reason to simply celebrate but this one comes with a bigger conversation attached to it. Writer-editor Apurva M Asrani has questioned why the film took so long to get an OTT release and whether the changing space for stories around dissent, rights and due process had anything to do with the delay.
And that question has given the film’s long-awaited digital release an entirely different context.
Shahid Finally Gets An OTT Release
Shahid originally released in theatres on October 18, 2013. More than a decade later, it has finally found a streaming home on Prime Video.
The film tells the story of Shahid Azmi, a Mumbai-based lawyer and human rights activist who was assassinated in 2010. Rajkummar Rao plays the title character, with Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Prabhleen Sandhu and Baljinder Kaur among the supporting cast.
Directed by Hansal Mehta, the film focuses on Azmi’s work defending people accused under terror laws and his fight for due process.
What makes the OTT arrival even more notable is the recognition the film received when it was released. At the 61st National Film Awards, Mehta won Best Director, while Rajkummar Rao shared the Best Actor honour with Malayalam actor Suraj Venjaramoodu.
Yet despite all that acclaim, Shahid remained unavailable on a major streaming platform for almost 13 years.
Apurva Asrani Asks: Why Now?
Apurva Asrani, who co-wrote and edited Shahid, welcomed the film’s arrival on Prime Video but also used the occasion to ask a much bigger question.
In a post on X on September 28, Asrani reflected on the film’s long absence from streaming and connected it to the broader space available for stories about dissent, activism and the rights of accused people.
His central question was simple: why did it take 13 years?
Asrani also reflected on the changing environment for filmmakers, writers and actors who wanted to tell stories dealing with similar subjects. He suggested that some projects struggled to get made and alleged that some creators eventually moved towards what he described as more politically acceptable stories.
Those are Asrani’s views on the film’s journey, and the reason for Shahid’s delayed OTT arrival has not been publicly established in the reports about its release.
What Did Apurva Asrani Say About The Changing Space For Such Films?
Asrani’s post went beyond simply discussing the streaming delay.
He questioned whether the mood around films dealing with dissent and the rights of the accused had changed, and whether that could explain why Shahid has finally found a streaming platform in 2026.
He also looked back at his own journey with the film. For Asrani, Shahid was more than just another writing assignment. It established him as a co-writer and editor and, as he put it, brought him back towards the kind of cinema he believes in.
At the same time, he made it clear that whatever the reason behind the long wait, he remains proud of the film.
He thanked Prime Video for finally giving Shahid a streaming home and encouraged audiences to watch the film or revisit it.
About Shahid
Released in 2013, Shahid is based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who was killed in 2010.
Rajkummar Rao’s performance as Azmi became one of the major highlights of the film, while Hansal Mehta’s direction gave the story a grounded and realistic treatment.
The film first premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival as part of its City to City programme before travelling to several other international festivals.
The screenplay was written by Sameer Gautam Singh and Apurva Asrani, with Asrani also serving as editor. The film was produced by Anurag Kashyap, Sunil Bohra, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur.
It went on to win two National Awards, with Mehta taking Best Direction and Rao sharing Best Actor.

Shahid OTT Release Date: Where To Watch The Film
After 13 years, Shahid is finally available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in India.
For a film that received major critical recognition, won National Awards and has remained relevant because of its subject, the long OTT wait has certainly made this an unusual streaming story.
Now that Shahid is finally accessible to a much wider audience, the conversation around the film is likely to move beyond its delayed release and back to the story, performances and ideas that made it stand out in the first place.
