Directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, the film explores a deeply sensitive and historic chapter in Bengal’s past. Rather than relying on spectacle, the film centers its narrative on Human Cost, memory and trauma, making it the kind of movie audiences want to pause, absorb, debate and revisit – which makes the OTT the perfect second life for it.

The film’s theatrical journey, however became part of its story. Despite being set in West Bengal, The Bengal Files was not screened in any theatres across the state. While the makers alleged a ban, theatre owners in Kolkata stated that screens were already occupied by films such as The Conjuring: Last Rites, Dhumketu, Bohurupi and Baaghi 4.
As a result, the film had a limited theatrical footprint and modest box office returns compared to mainstream commercial releases – but it gained heavy conversation momentum online instead.
Adding to the discourse, the Calcutta High Court dismissed a censorship request filed by Santanu Mukherjee, who objected to what he believed was a misrepresentation of his grandfather, freedom fighter Gopal Chandra Mukherjee. The court’s dismissal cleared the film for continued circulation.

Interestingly, the title itself was born from audience feedback. During early promotional events in the U.S, many misinterpreted the film’s initial working title. After speaking directly with viewers, Agnihotri finalized the title The Bengal Files to eliminate confusion.
The Bengal Files arrives on Zee5 on November 21, 2025 – and if the theatrical wave proved anything, it’s that the conversation is far from over.
