While a section of Shah Rukh Khan’s fanbase is questioning the decision to release songs instead of unveiling a full-fledged teaser, there could be a much larger marketing strategy at play. And from a film marketing perspective, the approach makes considerable sense.
With December shaping up to be an extremely crowded theatrical window, KING cannot afford to depend on a conventional promotional campaign. The film is not just targeting the Indian market. Its ambitions extend to international territories, where Shah Rukh Khan enjoys a formidable audience base.
The decision to introduce the campaign through an Ed Sheeran collaboration, therefore, could be more than just a musical announcement. It is an attempt to create international awareness, attract audiences beyond the traditional Bollywood ecosystem and establish KING as a global entertainment property even before its principal promotional assets arrive.
And this could be just the beginning.
Why KING Is Holding Back Its Biggest Promotional Assets
The strategy appears to be centred around staggered asset deployment.
Instead of exhausting its biggest promotional material upfront, the team seems keen to sustain audience interest through a carefully planned sequence of announcements, music releases and promotional reveals.
‘Tu Mil Jaaye’ is already out, while another song, reportedly featuring Kareena Kapoor, is expected to follow. These musical releases could help the film maintain visibility, generate conversations and keep its digital engagement alive while the team prepares for its bigger promotional push.
But what about the teaser?
According to our sources, the teaser is being held back for a window around the last week of November or the first week of December, followed by a trailer closer to the release. If this timeline holds, the team is essentially reserving its strongest theatrical marketing assets for the period when audience attention becomes most valuable.
There is another interesting aspect to the campaign: information control.
KING is reportedly planning to keep its storyline and character details tightly under wraps. The teaser and trailer are expected to reveal very little about the actual plot, character identities and narrative developments.
Mystery and secrecy can actually become a marketing asset if managed well.
For example, big films like Pathaan and Jawan generate immense pre release buzz by strategically revealing parts of the film to audiences. The intent of such revelations is to not explain the entire film through promotional material but to give audiences just enough information to start conversations, develop theories and demand more.
KING could be attempting something similar, albeit with its own promotional architecture.
Inside Shah Rukh Khan’s Global Marketing Game Plan for KING
The bigger challenge, however, is December.
With major Hollywood franchises including Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three and Jumanji 4 vying for audience attention during the same time frame as KING, the movie will require more than just typical Bollywood promotional activities to generate buzz in the market and sustain discussion amongst the audience something new to discuss.
This is where the staggered release of marketing assets becomes important. Music can establish early awareness, the teaser can trigger mass curiosity, the trailer can communicate the film’s scale and theatrical appeal, and the final promotional phase can convert that awareness into ticket-buying intent.
In other words, the campaign needs to function as a continuous conversation rather than a series of disconnected announcements.
Of course, withholding promotional assets is not automatically a winning strategy. The music must connect, the teaser must deliver and the trailer must establish a compelling theatrical proposition. Curiosity without substance can quickly turn into audience fatigue.
But if Shah Rukh Khan and his team execute this campaign successfully, KING could emerge as one of the most interesting film marketing case studies of the year.

For Shah Rukh Khan, the challenge is not simply to generate hype. It is to sustain that hype in an exceptionally competitive release window and convert his enormous global fanbase into theatrical footfalls.
And if he manages to deliver another blockbuster against such formidable competition, it will be yet another reminder of why Shah Rukh Khan operates in a league of his own.
