KING vs Avengers Doomsday

KING vs Avengers: Doomsday: Can Shah Rukh Khan Take On Marvel’s Biggest Film?

On paper, December 2026 looks brutal. In reality, it could be exactly the kind of calendar Shah Rukh Khan’s KING needs.

December 18 will see two major Hollywood spectacles, Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, arrive in cinemas. Just six days later, on December 24, Shah Rukh Khan’s KING is scheduled to hit theatres in India and overseas.

At first glance, that looks like a dangerous clash. But from a trade perspective, the picture is more interesting. KING isn’t walking into Christmas because there is no other option. The release window makes sense when you look at the scale of the film, the 2026 calendar and the kind of audience the film is targeting.

Why Christmas Makes Sense For KING

The first thing to consider is the film itself.

KING is being mounted as a large-scale action spectacle. A project of this size needs time for extensive shooting, stunt work, VFX and post-production. Expecting a film like this to be completely ready by August or September would always be a tough proposition.

Then comes Diwali.

Ramayana already occupies that space and a film of that scale is expected to command enormous attention across the country. Putting KING into that battle would mean entering an already crowded event-film corridor.

January isn’t particularly attractive either, especially the early weeks. The holiday period is over, spending patterns change and theatrical footfalls can become harder to sustain.

Christmas, therefore, emerges as the natural big-ticket window.

And importantly, Christmas isn’t a weak compromise. It is one of the strongest theatrical periods of the year.

The Real Battle Is Always The Film

This is where the entire discussion comes down to one basic point.

A release date can create an opportunity. Only the film can convert it.

If KING delivers the action, emotion and spectacle that audiences expect from a Shah Rukh Khan event film, the competition becomes far less intimidating. If the content doesn’t connect, no release date can magically fix that.

Christmas can give the film a long runway, but word of mouth will decide how far it travels.

Avengers: Doomsday And Dune Are Not The Same Competition

Yes, Avengers: Doomsday will be huge. Yes, Dune: Part Three will dominate premium formats and attract audiences looking for a large-scale Hollywood experience.

But KING is selling something different.

Avengers has the Marvel audience. Dune has its own premium, large-format audience. KING is targeting Hindi-speaking audiences, families, mass moviegoers, Shah Rukh Khan fans and viewers looking for a big Hindi theatrical entertainer during Christmas.

That distinction matters.

A viewer can watch a Marvel film and still make a separate plan for a Shah Rukh Khan film. These aren’t necessarily competing for exactly the same emotional need.

Will Audiences Run Out Of Money?

This is another obvious question.

After Ramayana, Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, will audiences still have the appetite for another big theatrical outing?

The Christmas and New Year period doesn’t work like a single-choice window. It is one of the rare stretches when families, friends and groups often make multiple cinema plans.

Shah Rukh Khan’s recent theatrical run is also important here. Pathaan and Jawan showed that audiences will spend on a film when the theatrical experience feels worth it.

A Marvel film doesn’t automatically cancel the demand for a Shah Rukh Khan film.

And KING also carries the curiosity surrounding Siddharth Anand’s return after Dunki in 2023. The combination of Shah Rukh Khan, Siddharth Anand and a large-scale action setup is enough to generate considerable interest before the film even arrives.

What About Screens?

This is where the clash will become more practical.

Hollywood films will naturally have an advantage when it comes to IMAX and other premium large formats. That’s expected.

But KING doesn’t need to dominate every premium screen to work.

Its real strength will be show count, multiplex penetration, single-screen reach and occupancy across the holiday period. If the film starts performing, exhibitors have a simple reason to increase shows: audiences.

The industry ultimately follows demand.

If KING is filling shows while Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are also performing, there is room for all three films to find their respective audiences.

And let’s not forget the sheer pull of Shah Rukh Khan in India. The “KING” tag isn’t just a marketing line. His theatrical audience has repeatedly demonstrated that it can create its own demand.

Christmas Could Actually Help KING

The biggest advantage of December 24 is time.

The film gets the Christmas holiday, the weekend, the New Year period and multiple opportunities for audiences to discover it.

For a film like KING, that matters more than simply chasing the biggest possible opening day.

If the content clicks, families can come in. Young audiences can return with friends. Fans can go for repeat viewings. Word of mouth can build through the entire holiday corridor.

That is the real power of Christmas.

KING vs Avengers: Doomsday: The Bigger Picture

Calling this a straightforward clash between KING and Avengers: Doomsday would be too simplistic.

The two films are entering the market with different propositions and different audience expectations.

KING is taking a crowded Christmas corridor because that is where a large-scale Hindi event film can potentially extract maximum value from the holiday period.

There is competition. Absolutely.

But competition doesn’t automatically mean cannibalisation.

The real test begins when the audience gets to see the film.

If KING delivers on the big-screen experience, the Christmas window gives it enough time, holidays and audience availability to build momentum.

So, is December 24 a risky release date?

Yes.

Is it an unreasonable one?

Not necessarily.

For a film mounted on this scale and led by Shah Rukh Khan, Christmas 2026 could be less about avoiding competition and more about stepping into the biggest possible theatrical playground.
