The biggest fan of Shah Rukh Khan today is in a paradoxical situation. They want SRK to keep doing what he does best, while also wanting him to step away from the familiar and attempt something completely different.
That debate has now exploded online after a fan, @your_niaaaa, wrote that they would rather see Shah Rukh Khan attempt something like Tom Cruise’s Digger and fail than keep doing the same generic action films he has been making lately.
It is a pretty blunt take. But it also opens up a much bigger conversation about SRK’s career.
Which Shah Rukh Khan do audiences actually want?
The SRK Who Took Risks
There was a phase when Shah Rukh Khan was not afraid to experiment.
He went from romantic dramas to science fiction, from unusual characters to socially driven stories. Swades, Paheli, Ra.One, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Fan, Zero and Dunki all came from very different creative spaces.
Not all of them worked commercially. Some were heavily criticised. Some developed their own audience later. And a few simply remain divisive among fans.
But there was one thing these films had in common: they weren’t simply designed around giving audiences the most obvious version of Shah Rukh Khan.
That is what a section of fans seems to miss today.
Another fan summed up the frustration perfectly by asking people to watch Zero, Dunki, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ra.One, Jab Harry Met Sejal and Fan, arguing that SRK had already spent years making the kind of films people now claim they want from him.
And that argument is difficult to ignore.
But Did The Audience Reward That SRK?
This is where the debate gets complicated.
One fan pointed out that Shah Rukh Khan already tried the unconventional route with films like Swades, Fan and Ra.One, and the commercial results were not what the star’s stature demanded.
That is the uncomfortable truth.
It is easy to say that a superstar should take risks when sitting on social media and discussing film choices. It is much harder when the same experiment arrives in theatres and struggles.
For a superstar of SRK’s scale, every film comes with enormous expectations. The opening weekend becomes a talking point. The box office becomes a judgement on the actor. And suddenly a creative risk is no longer just a creative risk.
It becomes a verdict.
So can fans really blame Shah Rukh Khan for choosing films that give them the superstar experience they have been demanding for years?
Then Came The Action Era
After a long break from the big screen, SRK returned with Pathaan, followed by Jawan and Dunki.
The response to the action-driven comeback was impossible to ignore.
The image of Shah Rukh Khan as the larger-than-life action hero worked. Audiences embraced it. The superstar aura was back, theatres were celebrating him and the conversation around SRK changed almost overnight.
And this is exactly why the current criticism feels slightly unfair.
Fans spent years asking for Shah Rukh Khan in an action avatar. He finally delivered it. Now a section of the same audience is asking why he isn’t taking bigger creative risks again.
So what is the answer?
Maybe The Problem Isn’t Action
Perhaps the real issue isn’t that Shah Rukh Khan is doing action films.
The issue is whether the films are giving him something new to do within that space.
There is nothing wrong with SRK making a massive action entertainer. In fact, it suits his current position perfectly.
But imagine giving that same superstar scale to a character audiences genuinely haven’t seen him play before.
That could be the sweet spot.
The audience gets the whistles, the action and the larger-than-life moments. SRK gets a character that pushes him somewhere unfamiliar.
That would be far more interesting than simply asking him to choose between Swades and Jawan.
And Then There Is The Tom Cruise Comparison
The Tom Cruise comparison is interesting because it isn’t really about copying Tom Cruise.
It is about the freedom to fail.
Cruise has built one of the biggest action-star images in modern cinema, yet there is still room for him to attempt something different and potentially fail.
One fan made exactly this point, arguing that SRK has already spent an entire decade experimenting, while Cruise is attempting something different after years of massive action franchises.
There is another important part of that argument too: the audience.
If SRK walks away from another big action film and attempts something strange, ambitious and unconventional, will audiences actually give him the patience to fail?
Or will the same people who demand experimentation immediately question the decision if the film doesn’t open strongly?
That is the real problem.
SRK’s Fans May Want Two Different Things
The truth is, Shah Rukh Khan probably doesn’t need to choose between the two versions of himself.
There is the SRK who delivers mass action, superstar moments and theatrical spectacle.
And then there is the SRK who wants to disappear into a character, take a strange script and do something audiences aren’t expecting.
Both versions can exist.
What would really be exciting is seeing them come together.
Give Shah Rukh Khan a massive theatrical film, but don’t make the character predictable. Give him action, but also give him vulnerability. Give fans the superstar they came to see, but surprise them once the film begins.
Because perhaps that is what fans are actually asking for.
Not necessarily another Swades. Not necessarily another Jawan.

They want to be surprised by Shah Rukh Khan again.
Many fans even wish to see the superstar take a risk and fail rather than seeing the ‘safe’ version of him.
It would be more exciting to watch a Shah Rukh Khan film take a huge risk than one that never fails at all.
