The wait for Ramayana: Part One is finally getting clearer. The Ranbir Kapoor and Yash starrer is heading for a massive global theatrical release around the Diwali period and the release plan now gives us a much better idea of when audiences can actually watch the film.
Produced by Namit Malhotra and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana: Part One boasts an ensemble cast featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol and several others. Dharma will handle the film’s India release, while Sony Pictures is taking it to international markets.
The biggest question until now was the exact release date.
Ramayana Release Date In India
There has been plenty of confusion around the India release date over the past few months. November 6 was initially being discussed with some overseas schedules also listing that date. Another possibility was a post-Diwali release, something that has worked for several big Indian films over the years.
There was even speculation that Ramayana: Part One could release in India on November 8, which would have put it on Diwali day. However, that buzz reportedly came from a misinterpretation of an interview and was never the actual plan.
The latest information now points towards a different strategy.
Paid preview will take place on 4th November in India followed by the general release on 5th November.
The film’s release will take place in pre-Diwali period which is generally perceived challenging for theatrical business. But the industry landscape has changed and the makers are confident enough to take that gamble.
Why Ramayana Is Releasing Before Diwali
At first glance, a pre-Diwali release may seem surprising for a film being positioned as one of the biggest global Indian theatrical events.
But there is a clear reason behind the move.
It will be opening in major international markets on Thursday and hence would be an unusual case where India releases later than overseas markets.
It is therefore critical for India to open on the same day as the rest of the world and for India to have the opportunity to view the film.
The pre-Diwali period may not have the same box-office potential as the main festive days but it is no longer considered the major roadblock it once was.
The example of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again are sufficient to illustrate the point. Both films released on Diwali day in 2024 and even managed to post decent numbers on what is perceived to be one of the weakest days of the Diwali festival.
For Ramayana, the expectation is that the film’s massive initial demand will help it navigate the pre-Diwali phase before the post-Diwali period kicks in.
And once that happens, the box office could be in for a serious surge.
Ramayana Release Date In Overseas Markets
The international release is largely following the standard Thursday rollout.
Other countries international are following a standard Thursday release date.
For North America, the film will play previews on Wednesday, November 4th, and open on Thursday, November 5th.
The United Kingdom, South Africa and Mauritius are currently slated for November 6, although the UK date could potentially move earlier.
The release plans for China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong are currently undecided. These markets could potentially get a day-and-date release, but a later rollout remains possible as well.
