A Pakistani spy losing his memory and suddenly believing he is an Indian patriot? Udta Teer walks into theatres with a premise tailor-made for confusion, comedy and some cheeky political humour. The film starts with a playful energy that makes the audience curious about how far it can push the madness.

Directed by debutant Akash A Kaushik, the spy comedy stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, with Rahul Bose and the late Mukul Dev emerging as key highlights. The first half has enough laughs to keep the entertainment meter running, but the film struggles to maintain that rhythm once the story takes a serious turn.

Udta Teer Review: A Promising Idea With Plenty of Laughs

The story revolves around Vikrant Thapar, an Indian Counter Terrorism Squad agent who is secretly Bilal Ahmed, a Pakistani spy working deep inside the Indian establishment. His life takes an unexpected turn after an accident leaves him with amnesia. Convinced that he is a true Indian patriot, Vikrant begins working against the very network he once served.

The premise offers plenty of scope for mistaken-identity humour, spy games and political satire. The film makes good use of this setup in the first half, throwing one absurd situation after another at the audience. The comedy often lands, and the screenplay finds its rhythm through witty exchanges and characters caught in increasingly ridiculous situations.

The biggest win is that Udta Teer doesn’t take itself too seriously at the start. The jokes involving the undercover agents, their growing frustration and the confusion around Vikrant’s identity give the film a distinct comic flavour.

First Half: The Comedy Hits the Target

The first half is easily the film’s strongest stretch. Akash A Kaushik understands the comic potential of the premise and builds several entertaining sequences around mistaken identities, espionage blunders and geopolitical references. Some jokes are deliberately outrageous, but the film’s breezy approach helps them work.

Rahul Bose’s scenes are among the biggest highlights, while Mukul Dev adds another memorable presence. The humour also draws from old Hindi songs, with the use of Julie I Love You standing out as one of the more amusing moments. These sequences give the film the kind of theatrical energy that can generate spontaneous laughter.

The interval arrives with the story having established its central conflict and comic appeal. At this stage, Udta Teer feels like a spy spoof that could deliver a genuinely entertaining ride if it manages to sustain the same energy.

Second Half: The Film Loses Its Identity

Unfortunately, the second half is where the film starts losing control of its own narrative. The story shifts towards a more serious action-thriller mode, introducing multiple twists, double-crosses and changes in allegiance. Keeping track of who is working for whom becomes increasingly difficult.

The bigger problem is that the transition doesn’t feel entirely organic. The film begins by poking fun at spy thrillers and political posturing, but gradually moves towards the very conventions it initially seemed eager to mock. The humour takes a back seat, and the narrative becomes more interested in dramatic confrontations and patriotic messaging.

The film that begins by making fun of the spy genre eventually gets caught in its own spy games. The second half has moments that work, and the ending offers some satisfaction, but sharper editing and a simpler screenplay could have made the overall experience far more consistent.

Ayushmann Khurrana Leads the Madness

Ayushmann Khurrana handles the central role with confidence, balancing the confusion of a spy with the conviction of a man who believes he is fighting for his country. He looks comfortable with the comic material and manages the shift between Vikrant’s two identities without losing the character’s appeal.

Sara Ali Khan plays Yamini, Vikrant’s wife, and performs adequately within the limits of her role. However, the writing doesn’t give their relationship enough emotional depth, making the romantic track less effective than it could have been.

Rahul Bose is one of the film’s biggest assets. His performance brings an unpredictable comic energy to the proceedings, and his scenes are among the most memorable parts of the film. The late Mukul Dev also leaves a strong impression, making excellent use of his screen time.

Ram Kapoor and Gulshan Grover are dependable in their respective roles, while Suhail Nayyar adds to the fun. Smita Tambe, Sandeep Anand, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Brijendra Kala and Kavya Kumar provide capable support, helping the ensemble maintain the film’s comic rhythm.

Direction, Music, Action and Technical Aspects

For his directorial debut, Akash A Kaushik shows a clear understanding of comic timing. His handling of the first half is particularly effective, and the dialogues often provide the punch needed to make the absurd situations work. The challenge is maintaining that control when the film moves into more complicated territory.

Sachin-Jigar’s music is serviceable, with the title track being catchy. Choozay and Bhootni Ka are visually appealing but don’t leave a lasting musical impression, while Chann and Jai Hind feel less naturally integrated into the narrative. Ketan Sodha’s quirky background score fits the film’s unusual tone.

The action choreography by Sea Young Oh, Mohammed Aejaz Gulab Shaikh and Mohd Amin Khatib adds to the entertainment value. Harshvir Oberai’s cinematography, Abhilasha Sharma’s costumes and Mayur Sharma’s production design do the job. The editing by Shivkumar V Panicker and Prerna Saigal, however, could have been tighter, especially in the second half.

What Works and What Doesn’t

The film’s biggest strengths are its quirky premise, witty dialogue, strong comic stretches and entertaining performances, particularly from Rahul Bose and Mukul Dev. The first half has the kind of easygoing madness that can work well with audiences looking for a light theatrical entertainer.

The weaknesses are equally clear. The second half becomes unnecessarily complicated, the tonal shift feels abrupt, and the romantic track fails to create much impact. Some jokes may also divide viewers, particularly when the humour leans into sensitive territory. The film’s political satire could have been sharper and more consistent instead of shifting between irreverence and conventional patriotic drama.

Udta Teer Review: Final Verdict

Udta Teer is a decent spy comedy that gets off to a promising start and delivers several genuinely funny moments. Ayushmann Khurrana holds the film together, while Rahul Bose and the late Mukul Dev provide some of its most entertaining scenes.

However, the screenplay loses its grip in the second half, preventing the film from becoming the complete entertainer its premise promises. It remains a one-time watch for viewers who enjoy quirky comedies, but those expecting a tightly written spy satire may leave wanting more.
