De De Pyaar De 2 Movie Review: A Half-Fun, Half-Fatigued Sequel That Never Fully Finds Its Rhythm

The sequel to one of 2019’s most surprising romantic comedies arrives with cautious curiosity around it. De De Pyaar De 2 brings Ashish (Ajay Devgn) and Ayesha (Rakul Preet Singh) back to the big screen, attempting to continue a story that once felt bold, refreshing, and pleasantly unconventional. This time, the core conflict shifts-no longer is Ashish integrating Ayesha into his family; instead, the film explores how he fits into hers. And with that switch, the sequel tries to blend humour, generational differences, social commentary, and emotional drama into one large family spectacle.

But the results, much like the film’s characters, are uneven.

De De Pyaar De 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The screenplay by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain begins on comfortable ground, offering a quick yet clear recap of the previous film. The early writing is sharp enough-situational humour works, the pacing is brisk, and the emotional stakes appear promising. There’s an effort to retain the wit that made the first film click, and initially, it succeeds.

However, once the plot moves into the conflict-heavy territory, the script becomes less assured. The humour thins out, conversations turn repetitive, and several scenes feel longer than necessary. The core issue isn’t the idea- it’s the inconsistency in execution. Emotional moments are stretched beyond impact, while the more dramatic beats feel diluted by overexplaining.

The writing shines occasionally, especially during the playful pop-culture references and the scenes featuring Jaaved–Meezaan Jafferi. But the second half loses both clarity and energy, causing the film to feel much heavier than intended.

DE DE PYAAR DE 2 STORYLINE

The movie resumes exactly where the first film wrapped up. Ashish’s family had reluctantly but eventually accepted Ayesha into their household. Now, the story shifts perspective- Ayesha wants her own parents to meet Ashish. The plan is to break the news gently after her sister-in-law delivers her baby, but her parents- Rajji Khurana (R. Madhavan) and Mrs. K (Gautami Kapoor)- discover the relationship sooner than expected.

They invite the couple home, unaware of the significant age gap. Their initial warmth slowly transforms into stunned disbelief once they realise that their daughter’s partner is their contemporary. What begins as polite discomfort snowballs into planned resistance. The parents decide, quietly but firmly, that they must pull their daughter out of this relationship.

The first half works well: the humour feels organic, interpersonal dynamics create enough interest, and the contrast between Ashish’s awkwardness and the Khurana household’s suppressed shock delivers several entertaining scenes.

But the shift after interval is stark. The narrative slows down, emotional conflicts drift without landing, and the screenplay becomes repetitive. Even when the pre-climax twist arrives, it feels like a late attempt to inject momentum. By this point, the film has already lost the crisp rhythm that the first hour maintained.

De De Pyaar De 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

R. Madhavan is undoubtedly the film’s biggest strength. His charm, natural humour, and grounded presence uplift even average scenes. He steals the film effortlessly.

Rakul Preet Singh delivers a steady performance with several strong moments. She carries the emotional beats earnestly and keeps the story moving.

Ajay Devgn, surprisingly, feels underutilised. His character lacks the detailing and emotional complexity that made Part 1 engaging. In many portions, he feels like a passenger in his own franchise.

Gautami Kapoor is a warm presence and shares lovely chemistry with Madhavan.
Meezaan Jafri brings honesty to his role despite limited screen time.
Ishita Dutta and Jaaved Jaaferi contribute effectively to the supporting ensemble.

De De Pyaar De 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

Director Anshul Sharma shows a good command over light family drama, and several early scenes carry his confident touch. But maintaining tonal consistency proves difficult. The transition from comedy to emotional heaviness is abrupt, making the second half feel stretched and uneven.

The loudness of certain scenes- particularly the confrontational moments- dulls their impact. The film also suffers visually; the overused house set restricts the narrative and makes the film resemble a sitcom more than a cinematic story.

Music is serviceable at best.
“Babul Ve” stands out at an emotional juncture, but the rest of the soundtrack struggles to leave any mark. The background score overly depends on callbacks to the first film’s music.

What Works

  • First half is genuinely entertaining and easy to sit through.
  • R. Madhavan’s performance provides consistent charm and energy.
  • Fun, clever references to real-life films and moments create enjoyable reactions.

What Doesn’t Work

  • The second half shifts gears too sharply and loses narrative balance.
  • Ajay’s character feels underdeveloped in a film anchored around him.
  • The climax stretches far beyond necessity, diluting emotional payoff.

OVERALL VERDICT

De De Pyaar De 2 had a compelling emotional foundation and a talented ensemble cast, but the uneven storytelling and sluggish second half hold it back from becoming the engaging sequel it could’ve been. It begins with spark, humour, and promise- but slowly slips into a tiring loop of repetitive conflicts and stretched drama.

Despite its flaws, the film has moments of charm and a handful of genuinely enjoyable scenes, driven largely by Madhavan’s excellent presence.
