After years of bold questions, celebrity confessions, savage rapid-fire rounds and gossip that kept Bollywood buzzing, Koffee With Karan is entering its final season. And for its opening episode, Karan Johar has brought back one of his most talked-about guests, Salman Khan. The result? A warm, nostalgic conversation that looks back at their long association, but doesn’t always deliver the madness fans have come to expect from the show.
Koffee With Karan Season 9: Salman Khan And Karan Johar Look Back
Karan Johar kicked off the final season with a dose of self-awareness, reflecting on how the show has changed over its 22-year journey. After 162 episodes, he joked that he had spent much of his career asking celebrities about their sex lives, only for people to now ask him about his own.
The host also admitted that some of his past questions make him cringe today, including the infamous moment when he asked Salman Khan whether he was good in bed. Salman, however, had a different take on looking back at old comments and decisions. He suggested that people grow with time and should accept their past rather than keep regretting it.
That exchange gives the premiere a reflective quality. It feels less like the beginning of another gossip-filled season and more like a farewell to a show that has been part of Bollywood’s pop culture conversation for over two decades.
But is that enough for a final season opener?
Nostalgia Takes Centre Stage, But The Masala Is Missing
Much of the episode revolves around Salman and Karan revisiting their shared history, including how the superstar came on board for Karan’s directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Their conversation about family bonds and friendships in the industry adds a personal touch, making the episode feel relaxed and genuine.
There are also some genuinely entertaining moments. Salman’s funny takes on the ghost in his house were hilarious, and the story of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s visit to the set of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to witness the first film of director Karan Johansson was wonderful.
Industry peers like Bobby Deol, Varun Dhawan and even Sanjay Dutt praise a lot for Salman in this episode. This increases the testament to the man who is perceived to be generous and very loyal to his friends.
However, the archival clips from earlier seasons make one thing clear: Koffee With Karan used to be far more unpredictable. The old episodes thrived on cheeky remarks, unfiltered gossip, awkward revelations and moments that became headlines overnight. Revisiting those clips is fun, but it also reminds viewers of the very thing that feels missing from this premiere.
The warmth is there. The nostalgia works. The trademark chaos, though, is in short supply.
Karisma Kapoor Brings Back The Magic Of The 90s
The episode gets another lift when Karisma Kapoor joins Salman and Karan for a special segment. Their conversation turns into a lively trip back to the 1990s, when film shoots were physically demanding, double shifts were common, and vanity vans and elaborate location arrangements weren’t the norm.
The trio also reflect on why films and music from that era continue to hold a special place in their hearts. Their discussion touches on the changing relationship between cinema and family audiences, with Salman and Karisma representing a generation of stars who built their careers on films watched across age groups.
For viewers who grew up watching 90s Bollywood, this section is likely to be one of the episode’s biggest draws. It brings together familiar faces, shared memories and a glimpse of an industry that operated very differently from today’s star-driven landscape.
It’s the kind of conversation that makes the final season feel like a celebration of Bollywood’s past. Whether it will satisfy viewers looking for sharper gossip is another matter.
Karan Johar Shines During Rapid Fire
Karan is still a natural host. He has great timing, he’s very funny and he knows how to keep conversation going without making it all about him. In this episode of the show Karan has mostly let Salman take the lead and told his own stories.
The energy would dip in the last round but thank God for the Rapid Fire round of Karan’s. This would be more entertaining than Salman’s answers for this round and that is why Karan is still so relevant on celebrity TV.
Karisma eventually declares Salman the winner and hands him the coveted hamper. Still, for viewers who tune in specifically for bold answers and unexpected revelations the round may feel underwhelming.
One of the episode’s more surprising moments comes when Salman talks about having children. It’s a personal revelation that naturally catches attention, offering a glimpse into a side of the actor that viewers don’t often get to see in this format.
Does Koffee With Karan Season 9 Get The Send-Off Right?
A precarious balance between the provocative talk show that made Koffee With Karan a hit by challenging its guests with strange and uncomfortable questions and relying on them for sensational soundbites, and a more contemplative take on the friendships, and personal growth of Bollywood stars and the changing nature of Bollywood.
This episode clearly leans towards the second. Salman and Karan share an easy comfort that comes from years of knowing each other and the conversations feel more genuine than manufactured. As a nostalgic opener for the show’s final season, it has its moments.
As with any final season, there are certain expectations that the fans have. Yes, they want warmth but they also want some sharp questions, plenty of cheeky banter and some unexpected surprises. The answers are there in this premiere but we aren’t quite back where we started just yet.
The verdict: Koffee With Karan Season 9 kicks off on a sweet note with Salman Khan sharing some of his personal experiences and making for some very funny moments on the show. It’s a nice nostalgic trip but for viewers who are awaiting the show’s typical spicy gossip and unadulterated masala, this first episode is a little too tame.
