Shah Rukh Khan: A Love Letter to the Man Who Taught Millions to Dream

Dear Shah Rukh,

Every once in a while, Facebook takes me back to 2010, 2011 and 2012. Those were my school days. Days when life was simpler, dreams were bigger than our understanding of the world, and happiness could be found in the smallest things. Among those memories are a few Facebook posts that never fail to make me smile. I would write things like, “I wish I could meet Shah Rukh Khan at least once in my life.” Sometimes, I would make a promise to myself: “One day, I will meet SRK. No matter what happens.”

My friends and relatives would laugh. Some would find it amusing, while others probably thought it was another childhood obsession that would disappear with time. But how do you explain to someone that a man they have never met has already given them thousands of reasons to smile? How do you tell them that someone living miles away, in a house called Mannat, has somehow become a part of your everyday life?

I didn’t know how to explain it then. I still don’t. All I knew was that I loved Shah Rukh Khan. And perhaps, like millions of others, I had no idea that this love would become one of the most beautiful journeys of my life.

Some people spend their childhood collecting toys, some collect stamps, and some collect dreams. I spent mine collecting little hopes of meeting one man.

And then, on December 12, 2018, life decided to surprise that little boy.

After so many years of wishing, hoping and imagining, I finally met Shah Rukh Khan. Not outside a theatre, not at an airport, not from a distance behind a barricade, but inside his home, Mannat. I was there as a journalist, covering the promotions of Zero. I had entered the house of the man whose name had occupied so many of my childhood conversations.

The irony still makes me smile. Just three months earlier, I had stood outside Mannat, like millions of other fans, trying to capture a selfie with the iconic building in the background. I had no idea that life was quietly preparing a surprise for me. The same place I had admired from outside would soon become the place where I would meet my childhood hero.

There are moments when life feels like a film, and you almost want to pinch yourself to make sure you haven’t imagined the scene. December 12 was one such moment. I met him, spoke to him and interviewed him. I was supposed to be a journalist asking questions, but somewhere inside me, that schoolboy was still trying to understand what was happening.

I was in shock and awe for almost a week. I kept revisiting the photographs, the videos, the tweets and the posts. Every little detail felt precious. Even today, all those memories remain on my social media accounts. I have never felt the need to remove them. Why would I? They are not merely photographs of a celebrity meeting. They are little pieces of a dream that once seemed too distant to come true.

Since then, I have met him four times in person, and have had the privilege of interacting with him through his #AskSRK sessions at least six times. Even today, when he takes a few seconds to respond to one of my questions on X, I experience the same excitement. A grown man, with responsibilities and a hundred things on his mind, suddenly finds himself smiling at his phone because Shah Rukh Khan has replied to him. Some things, thankfully, never change.

The world may call it a celebrity interaction. For me, it will always be a little boy’s dream finding its way home.

There is another rather interesting chapter in my story. I grew up in a family where I was practically the only Shah Rukh Khan fan. The rest were Salman Khan fans. So, you can imagine the number of debates, comparisons and friendly arguments I have survived over the years. I was always ready to defend my favourite man. Whether it was a film that didn’t work, a controversial moment or the infamous Wankhede incident, I somehow found myself standing on his side. Sometimes with facts, sometimes with emotions, and sometimes simply because I couldn’t imagine not defending someone I loved so much.

I have cried over his failures and celebrated his successes as if they were my own. I have felt the disappointment of a film not doing well, the happiness of a comeback and the excitement of seeing him conquer the big screen again. When Pathaan succeeded, it felt personal. When Jawan arrived, it felt personal. And even when a film didn’t receive the response I had hoped for, my affection for the man remained untouched.

Perhaps that is what happens when someone becomes a part of your growing-up years. You stop looking at their journey as just another celebrity’s career. You begin to see pieces of your own life in it. His victories remind you of the importance of perseverance, and his difficult days remind you that even the most celebrated people have to fight their own battles.

When you grow up loving someone, their success doesn’t feel like news. It feels like a prayer being answered.

But Shah Rukh, I often wonder whether you realise what you have really given us. Beyond the box-office records, the awards, the superstardom and the countless films, you have given us something much more precious: emotions that we will carry for the rest of our lives.

Through your romance, you taught us that love is perhaps the most beautiful language in the world. You made us believe that a man doesn’t become less masculine by expressing his feelings. That sensitivity is not a weakness, that kindness is attractive, and that there is nothing embarrassing about loving someone wholeheartedly. You made romance feel like poetry, even for those of us who couldn’t put a sentence together to express what we felt.

You gave us Raj, who made us believe in love that waits. You gave us Aman, who taught us to smile even when life is unfair. You gave us Rizwan, who reminded us that the world could do with a little more compassion. And you gave us so many characters who became companions at different stages of our lives.

I think that is why your presence feels so comforting. After a difficult day, sometimes all it takes is one of your songs, one familiar smile or a few minutes of watching you being your charming, mischievous self. It could be Chaiyya Chaiyya, It’s the Time to Disco, Mitwa, Gerua or any of those countless moments when you make even the most ordinary things look magical. Suddenly, the day feels a little lighter.

You are our favourite stress-buster, Shah. A familiar face in an unfamiliar world. A little bit of nostalgia on an otherwise exhausting day. A reminder that happiness doesn’t always have to be complicated.

And perhaps this is something only a true superstar can achieve: making millions of people feel better without even knowing that they needed cheering up.

I also want to talk about the boy who came to Mumbai with dreams and somehow became the man who made an entire generation believe in theirs. Your journey has never been just about becoming a superstar. It has been about daring to imagine a life that others might have considered impossible. You came without the privileges that so many people associate with success in the film industry, and you built a world that eventually became yours.

Not everyone can become Shah Rukh Khan. We know that. But because of you, a lot of us have stopped being afraid of wanting something extraordinary. You have made us understand that our circumstances do not necessarily have to decide the size of our dreams.

I still remember something you told me at the end of our interview: “Don’t ever get scared of dreaming big.” I wonder if you remember saying it. Perhaps it was just another piece of advice you shared with a young journalist. But I carried those words home. And I continue to carry them.

One thing I have particularly admired about you over the years is your honesty when you speak about success and life. You don’t always wrap your advice in beautiful words just to make it sound comforting. You often remind us that hard work has no alternative, that one must keep striving, and that one should never forget to pray. There is a certain beauty in that honesty. You remind us that dreaming big is wonderful, but dreams also demand discipline, patience and effort.

Your success is extraordinary, but perhaps what makes your journey inspiring is that you have never made success look effortless. You have spoken about failures, disappointments, insecurities and the realities of life. And in doing so, you have reminded us that even the biggest names in the world are human.

Beyond cinema, your charitable work and humanitarian contributions have also shown that the privilege of being loved by millions comes with an opportunity to do something meaningful for others. The applause may make a superstar, but what one does with that influence can make a difference to lives that may never appear in the headlines.

You are turning 61, Shah, and I have to say, time seems to have made some very strange arrangements with you. But while we continue to celebrate your energy and your presence, I also want to make one request. Please take care of yourself. Prioritise your health. Rest when you need to. Spend time with your family. Do things that make you happy. We know that fans want more films, more appearances and more of everything, but you don’t owe us your exhaustion.

Take your time. We will wait.

Because we don’t just want to see you on the big screen. We want to see you happy, healthy and smiling in the years to come. We want many more birthdays, many more interviews, many more silly jokes, many more #AskSRK sessions and many more moments when you make us feel like the luckiest fans in the world.

And whenever your next film arrives, you will find us where you have always found us: in theatres, waiting for the lights to go down, ready to celebrate you. First day, first show. No matter how long you take.

Some have stood outside Mannat for hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of you. Some have travelled across cities just to watch your film on the first day. Some associate your songs with people they have lost. Some found comfort in your characters when real life was unkind. Some grew up watching you with their parents, and now watch you with their own children. And some, like me, once wrote on Facebook about a dream that eventually came true.

We are all different people, living different lives, fighting different battles. But somewhere, somehow, we have all found a little piece of happiness in you.

I remember you once saying that if you stepped outside your house, seven out of ten people would smile upon seeing you. You called that a good average. Shah, please make it ten out of ten. Because I genuinely believe you have made even people who don’t follow your films smile at some point. Your presence has a way of reminding people of simpler, happier times.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful thing about your relationship with your audience. You have made millions of strangers feel like they know you, while giving each of them the feeling that their own little story matters.

Thank you for being the reason behind thousands of smiles. Thank you for making love look beautiful, kindness look powerful and dreams look possible. Thank you for giving us films that became memories, songs that became emotions and characters that became companions. Thank you for making our childhood a little more magical and our adulthood a little more bearable.

You once built a house called Mannat. Millions of us have built little places for you in our hearts. And unlike buildings, those places don’t need walls, gates or security. They simply exist, quietly, lovingly, and forever.

And if I ever get the chance to meet you again, I might have a hundred things to say. But I suspect I will end up saying the simplest thing of all:

Thank you for making life a little more beautiful.

With love, always.
