Sometimes, even the people playing terrifying characters struggle to watch themselves on screen. For Inde Navarrette, one particular bedroom scene in Obsession was so unsettling that she would rather not watch it again.
Directed by Curry Barker and starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, the horror film made a strong impact at the Indian box office. Now, it’s heading to streaming, giving more viewers a chance to experience its disturbing moments. Ahead of its digital premiere, Inde opened up about the scene that frightened her the most and explained the unusual visual technique behind her character’s appearance.
Inde Navarrette Reveals the Scariest Scene in Obsession
The scene takes place in a bedroom, where Inde’s character, Nikki, hides in a corner while Bear is asleep. The moment is designed to make viewers uncomfortable, and it seems the effect wasn’t limited to the audience.
Inde admitted that she finds the scene too frightening to watch herself. Speaking about the moment, she said, “This is the scariest part of the film. I refuse to watch this scene. I was looking at the corner. I was like, I know what we’re talking about, but yeah, this is the uncanny valley makeup.”
Her reaction offers a glimpse into just how unsettling the scene turned out to be, even for someone who was part of making it.
The Uncanny Valley Concept Behind the Frightening Look
The disturbing appearance in the scene wasn’t accidental. Director Curry Barker drew inspiration from the uncanny valley, a psychological concept that describes the discomfort people feel when something looks almost human but has subtle features that make it seem unnatural.
Inde explained how Barker wanted to tap into that instinctive reaction.
“Curry had the idea of kind of playing with that part of your brain when something looks human, but there’s a part of your brain that recognizes that it’s not, and that is called the uncanny valley,” she said.
The idea is simple but effective. When a face looks familiar at first glance but something about it feels wrong, the result can be far more disturbing than a conventional horror makeup look.
How Makeup Artist Kate Oja Created the Unsettling Look
Bringing that concept to life required careful work from makeup artist Kate Oja. Rather than completely transforming Inde’s face, the team exaggerated certain features to create an appearance that felt human yet strangely unnatural.
The look drew inspiration from the aesthetic associated with Joker. The makeup emphasised the outline of Inde’s lips, added black around her pupils to make her eyes stand out, and highlighted fine lines across her face. These small details helped create the eerie effect seen in the bedroom sequence.
Inde praised Oja’s work, explaining how the makeup brought Barker’s idea to life.
“And Kate Oja, who is the makeup artist for this, really did a good job because it’s terrifying. We, in a Joker-esque way, emphasized the lining of my lips and just kind of exaggerated certain features to give it this inhuman aspect. So we put black around my pupils to emphasize the eyes and just kind of all of the little lines in my face.”
It’s a good example of how horror doesn’t always need elaborate creatures or graphic effects to get under the audience’s skin. Sometimes, a few carefully altered facial details are enough to make a familiar face genuinely frightening.
