Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner returns as Mike McLusky in Mayor of Kingstown, the crime thriller about a man caught between law enforcement and the criminal underworld. Created by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, the Paramount+ series explores the brutal power struggles, corruption, and violence that have taken over the fictional town of Kingstown, Michigan.
Season 4, which wrapped up in late 2025, ended with plenty of bloodshed. Kyle (Taylor Handley) finally avenged his wife’s murder, while the city’s already fragile balance of power continued to fall apart.
With another chapter on the way, fans are eager to know what happens next. So, when does Mayor of Kingstown Season 5 premiere? Here’s everything to know about the release date, cast, storyline, and first-look photos.
Will There Be a Season 5 of Mayor of Kingstown?
Yes, Mayor of Kingstown is returning for Season 5. Paramount+ confirmed the renewal on January 5, 2026, just over a week after the Season 4 finale.
However, there’s a catch. The upcoming season will also be the show’s last, bringing the story to a close with eight episodes. That’s fewer than the 10 episodes featured in each of the first four seasons.
Interestingly, Sheridan and Dillon had initially imagined a much longer run for the series. Dillon previously revealed that Sheridan had planned a seven-season story arc and already knew how he wanted the show to end.
“Whether it goes that far or that’s where we get [who knows], but he has an ending and everyone knows about it,” Dillon told Screen Rant in June 2024.
He also explained that Sheridan had mapped out the story years ago, including how it would begin and where Mike would end up in the final season. Dillon hoped the show would reach that planned conclusion, but with Season 5 confirmed as the last, the series will wrap up earlier than originally envisioned.
How Did Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 End?
Season 4 closed with a violent showdown that changed the lives of several major characters.
The gang war in Kingstown reached a breaking point as the Crips joined forces with the Detroiters and began gaining ground against the Colombians, both inside prison and on the streets.
Warden Nina Hobbs (Edie Falco) found herself in a difficult position. Under pressure from the Colombians, she was trying to protect her daughter and keep the prison under control. She imposed a lockdown to prevent a full-scale massacre, but Mike eventually convinced her to lift the restrictions. The decision quickly led to more bloodshed.
Meanwhile, Crips leader Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa) launched an attack on the Colombians’ headquarters and captured hitman Cortez (Derek Rivera). Cortez, however, managed to escape, leaving several dead Crips behind him.
The most emotional moment came when Kyle finally came face-to-face with Callahan (Richard Brake), the man responsible for his wife Tracy’s (Nishi Munshi) death.
After surviving an ambush, Kyle confronted Callahan, who taunted him about the murder. Kyle eventually snapped and shot him multiple times. The emotional weight of the moment caught up with him, and he broke down in Mike’s arms.
For Renner, that scene was especially important because it gave the brothers a moment of comfort amid all the violence.
“The beautiful end of it all is at least they [Mike and Kyle] have each other,” Renner told Entertainment Weekly, explaining why he fought to keep the emotional moment in the finale.
He added that the brothers finding comfort in each other offered viewers a small sense of hope after everything they had endured.
What Is Mayor of Kingstown Season 5 About?
The fifth season will pick up after Tracy’s murder and the violent revenge against Callahan, with a new threat arriving in Kingstown.
According to the official synopsis, FBI agent Russell Hardy (David Morse) comes to town searching for the fugitive Callahan. A determined lawman, Hardy soon threatens to expose Mike’s secrets and past actions, putting the already unstable balance of power at risk.
His investigation could create serious problems for Mike, who has spent years navigating the complicated relationships between criminals, prison authorities, and law enforcement.
With Callahan’s death adding another layer of tension to the story, Mike will have to deal with the consequences of the violence surrounding him. The new FBI investigation could also bring some of his darkest secrets into the open.
Jeremy Renner Shares an Update From the Final Season’s Sets
In June 2026, Renner took to Instagram to share photos with the cast and crew, marking the end of production on Season 5. His post also served as a farewell to the series.
“Today our production closes down for our SEASON 5 of @mayorofkingstown,” he wrote in a June 30 post, expressing gratitude to everyone involved.
Renner also reflected on how the show had helped him during his recovery from his 2023 snowplow accident. He thanked fans for their continued support, saying it had given him a renewed sense of purpose and helped him find love and positivity during a difficult period.
The actor also acknowledged his castmates and the crew for supporting him whenever he needed help.
“Today… I am HAPPY !! Blessings,” he concluded.
With production now wrapped, the focus shifts to the show’s final chapter and how the story of Mike McLusky will ultimately end.

It’s still unclear whether Derek Rivera will return as Cortez. Given the events of Season 4, the character has plenty of reasons to seek revenge. He previously warned Mike that his crew was more interested in the bigger power game involving “knights and rooks, mayors and kings” than in gang leaders such as Bunny.
