Shah Rukh Khan’s KING is already making history, and the film hasn’t even reached theatres yet. In what could be the biggest overseas distribution deal for an Indian film, Phars Films has reportedly acquired its international distribution rights for a staggering minimum guarantee (MG) of ₹175 crore.
Let that number sink in. No Indian film has reportedly commanded an overseas minimum guarantee of even ₹100 crore before. KING has now taken that figure to an entirely different level, showing just how much confidence the trade has in Shah Rukh Khan’s next big-screen spectacle.
Phars Films Beats YRF to KING’s Overseas Rights
There has been a significant change in the overseas distribution plans for KING. Yash Raj Films was originally expected to handle the film’s international release, but Phars Films has now stepped in with an offer reportedly too big to turn down.
According to sources close to the development, Phars has committed a whopping ₹175 crore as a minimum guarantee. This is an extraordinary figure for an Indian film and underlines the enormous commercial expectations surrounding the Shah Rukh Khan starrer.
The move also highlights a shift in the way the film’s overseas business will be handled. Most Bollywood distribution deals these days operate on a commission basis, with distributors charging a fee rather than guaranteeing a fixed amount upfront. YRF had followed this model for Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Dunki, and the same arrangement was reportedly planned for KING.
However, Phars came in with a significantly bigger offer. And when a distributor puts this kind of money on the table, the equation changes.
How the ₹175 Crore Deal Could Help KING
Beyond the headline-grabbing figure, the deal could also help reduce some of the financial risk for the film’s producers. With KING expected to be one of Bollywood’s biggest productions, securing a massive overseas guarantee provides a substantial level of upfront recovery.
The film is among the most ambitious Bollywood projects outside Ramayana, and its overseas business will be crucial to its overall box office performance.
Phars is expected to follow its usual distribution strategy by selling individual territories to sub-distributors while directly handling the Middle East, its home market. The company has reportedly already received a substantial offer from Germany, suggesting that interest in the film’s overseas rights is building even before its theatrical release.
Interestingly, several territory distributors could remain the same as those who would likely have worked with YRF. The more significant changes are expected in markets such as North America, the United Kingdom and the Middle East, where YRF traditionally operates through its own offices.
Can KING Recover ₹175 Crore Overseas?
Here comes the real challenge.
A minimum guarantee of ₹175 crore is a massive vote of confidence, but recovering that investment will require KING to deliver a powerful overseas box office performance. The film is expected to target overseas gross figures in the region of Jawan and Pathaan, both of which earned around USD 48 million internationally.
With Phars potentially selling certain territories at a premium, the effective recovery target could move closer to USD 50 million.
That is a demanding benchmark, even for a superstar like Shah Rukh Khan. While SRK has an enormous international audience, a big opening alone will not be enough. KING will need strong word of mouth, sustained collections and impressive performance across key overseas markets to justify such a high valuation.
The competition could make things even tougher. The film is expected to arrive during the lucrative Christmas and New Year period, when major Hollywood releases such as Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three and Jumanji 3 could compete for screens and audience attention.
That makes the overseas distribution deal both a major achievement and a high-stakes bet.
KING Has Set the Bar Before Its Release
For now, one thing is clear: Phars Films is placing enormous faith in Shah Rukh Khan and KING. A reported ₹175 crore overseas minimum guarantee is a landmark figure, and it puts the film under the spotlight long before its promotional campaign reaches full swing.
The real test will come when the film opens in cinemas. If KING manages to deliver the overseas numbers its distributors are banking on, this deal could become a defining moment for the international business of Indian cinema.
